In Astereae, I am primarily interested in Psilactis and in the subtribe
Machaerantherinae, which includes Machaeranthera and a number of
related genera. I am using a variety of approaches to study the
systematics and evolution of these genera, and am interested in
such things as the evolution of specific characteristics, the origin
of new species, and the role of interspecific hybridization in the
evolution of Psilactis, Machaeranthera, and their relatives. In
addition to studying the evolution of these genera, I am also involved
in revisionary and floristic work on them.

Research for the past 35 years on asters, goldenasters and goldenrods
and other Astereae. My lab focuses on morphology (multivariate morphometrics
and some cladistics) and cytotaxonomy (chromosome counts, karyotypes,
cytogenetics, cytogeography). I have active collaborations with
other labs working on DNA sequence based phylogenetic studies of
the Symphyotrichinae, Chrysopsidinae and Solidagininae. I have large
data bases on nomenclature and chromosome number reports of asters
and goldenrods. My web site has hundreds of pictures of many species
of asters, goldenasters and goldenrods with summaries of the latest
ideas on generic limits. Field work is an important part of the
research program. Viable cypselae of any aster or goldenrod from
anywhere in the world is most welcomed by the lab.

Research Interests: Within the Astereae, my research interests focus
on Townsendia, a Rocky Mountain genus of approximately 30 taxa,
nearly half of which include polyploid apomicts. We are currently
focusing on three projects within the genus. First, we have a (first)
phylogeny for the genus in progress, using sequence variation in
ITS and ETS regions. The resultant phylogeny will be used to examine
the evolution of apomixis in the genus. Second, Ph. D. candidate
Stacey Thompson is examining patterns of multiple autopolyploid
origins in Townsendia hookeri. Third, M. Sc. student Linda Jennings
has conducted a study of population genetic variation in two Utah
endemics; T. aprica and T. jonesii var. lutea.
