HOW TO APPLY
Deadline: Application March 14, 2008, 12:00 PM, MST
Submission: Completed application must be submitted to Cheryl Martin as a hard copy (Biology Main Office, 167 Castetter Hall).
Each scholarship application requires the following:
- A cover page – use the one from this link
- The main body where the research is discussed and references are listed
- A curriculum vitae is required and generally it is a single page
- A letter of recommendation from faculty advisor
- A budget for the amount of $500
The Main Body of the Research Proposal:
The portion of the proposal discussing the research project must not exceed two pages and the appropriate references may be provided on a third page. The proposal is to contain background on the project and a basic research plan. Each page is to be printed on one side with one inch margins and 11 pt font. Only one research proposal is required even it the student is applying for several scholarships.
Letter of Recommendation:
This letter is to indicate that the student is in good standing and eligible for the scholarship. The letter may be submitted directly to Cheryl Martin via Email at cherylm@unm.edu. Only one letter is required for each student even though the student applies for several scholarships.
The Budget:
There is to be an indication how the scholarship money is to be spent. This is not to be an overwhelming task and only a general dollar value is needed. In the case of materials and supplies, it would be useful to list the items needed with a combined dollar value. If a service is to be used, it would be good to list the company with their rates. The use of an approximate dollar value allows for price changes between the time of application and ordering of items. Travel to field sites or purchase of materials and supplies for research are considered eligible expenses for this scholarship. If the request is for travel to study sites then it would be useful to identify the site, indicate the frequency of trips and the distance. Travel to meetings is not considered eligible under this award. The primary use of the budget is to provide additional information about how the project is to be conducted.
Tips for a good proposal:
- Outline the big picture importance of your project.
- Explain in clear terms what you plan, how it will answer your questions and how you will analyze the data collected.
- Frequently, statement of hypothesis helps to give the proposal focus and results obtained can be evaluated with respect to the hypothesis.
- Be succinct.
- Submit proposal on time - before noon, Friday, March 14, 2008.
- Check to ensure that your letter of recommendation from your advisor has been received. The committee will not contact advisors for letters of recommendation.
- Apply for as many scholarships as you are qualified.
